The Hidden Dangers of Social Media Skincare Trends (and What to Do Instead)

By Casey Durrett Leave a Comment

Ladies viewing social media from mobile phones

Scrolling through Instagram or TikTok, you’ve probably seen influencers with glassy, glowing skin raving about the next big thing in skincare. One week it’s a viral “miracle” serum, the next it’s a 10-step routine that promises instant transformation.

But before you rush to add that trending product to your cart, let’s talk about what’s really happening behind the scenes—and why trusting social media for skincare advice can do more harm than good.

As a licensed esthetician, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when people fall for influencer-driven skincare. Spoiler: it often leads to wasted money, irritated skin, and frustrating setbacks.

Let’s break it down.

Are Influencers Really Experts?

Most influencers aren’t estheticians, dermatologists, or scientists. They’re content creators—and many of them are paid to promote products. That doesn’t mean they’re all dishonest, but it does mean their “must-have” recommendations might not be based on real results.

Here’s how influencer marketing works in the beauty industry:

  • Sponsorships & Brand Deals: Many influencers are paid thousands of dollars to promote a product. Some may have never even used it before posting.
  • Affiliate Commissions: If they share a discount code or link, they earn a percentage of every sale.
  • Gifted PR Products: Brands send them free skincare in hopes of getting a glowing review.

This doesn’t mean every influencer is out to mislead you, but it does mean their experiences are often biased. And more importantly, what works for their skin won’t necessarily work for yours.

The Real Cost of Social Media Skincare Advice

When people experiment with products and treatments based on what’s trending rather than what their skin actually needs, they often end up with:

  • Irritated or damaged skin – Over-exfoliating, misusing actives, or layering incompatible ingredients can weaken your skin barrier, leading to breakouts, dryness, or even long-term sensitivity.
  • A cluttered skincare routine – Trying too many products at once can throw your skin off balance. Plus, a complex routine doesn’t always mean better results.
  • Wasted time & money – How many half-used bottles do you have in your bathroom right now? If you’ve ever bought a product that ended up being too harsh, too greasy, or just… ineffective, you know the struggle.

Why Following Skincare Trends Can Hurt Your Progress

Skincare is a long game, not a sprint. Constantly switching products and chasing trends can actually slow your progress because:

  • Your skin needs time to adjust to new products—changing too often can make it impossible to track what’s working.
  • Trends focus on what’s popular, not what’s effective long-term.
  • Not every product is formulated for your unique skin type, concerns, or climate (yes, that glass-skin routine from a 20-year-old influencer in LA might not work for your skin in Tennessee!).

The Better Alternative: A Streamlined, Personalized Approach

Instead of playing skincare roulette with every new trend, imagine having a routine that’s:

  • Customized to your skin type and goals
  • Made up of effective, science-backed products
  • Simple, sustainable, and actually works

That’s where I come in.

At The Lantern Skin Studio, I take the guesswork out of skincare. My treatments and product recommendations are tailored to your skin—no trends, no gimmicks, just real results.
