Epidermal Growth Factor in Skin Care: What You Need to Know

By Casey Durrett Leave a Comment

If you’ve been exploring advanced skincare, you’ve probably heard about Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF). It’s a powerhouse ingredient with impressive benefits, but not all EGF products are created equal. Let’s break down what EGF does, how it differs from other active ingredients like exfoliants and retinoids, and why quality matters when choosing an EGF serum.

What is Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), and How Does It Work?

EGF is a protein that plays a crucial role in cell regeneration. Naturally found in our skin, it signals cells to repair and produce collagen and elastin—two essentials for youthful, resilient skin. As we age, our natural levels of EGF decline, leading to slower skin renewal and more visible signs of aging. Applying EGF topically can help counteract this by stimulating cell growth, improving skin texture, and enhancing wound healing.

How is EGF Different from Exfoliants and Retinoids?

Unlike exfoliating acids (like AHAs and BHAs) and retinoids, which accelerate cell turnover by forcing old skin cells to shed, EGF works in a completely different way—it encourages the production of fresh, healthy cells from within.

  • Exfoliants & Retinoids: These remove dead skin cells and speed up cell turnover, which can be helpful but also irritating if overused.
  • EGF: This focuses on regeneration, strengthening the skin barrier and improving overall skin health without irritation.

The key takeaway? EGF doesn’t replace exfoliants or retinoids, but it complements them beautifully and can reduce how much exfoliation you need—when used correctly.

Skin Concerns EGF Can Improve

EGF is particularly beneficial for those dealing with:

  • Fine Lines & Wrinkles: By stimulating collagen production, EGF helps smooth out fine lines and softens deeper wrinkles over time.
  • Loss of Firmness & Elasticity: As skin ages, it loses its natural bounce. EGF strengthens the dermal structure, leading to firmer, more resilient skin.
  • Post-Procedure Healing: Whether you’ve had microneedling, laser treatments, or chemical peels, EGF can accelerate recovery and reduce downtime by promoting faster skin repair.
  • Scarring & Hyperpigmentation: EGF supports cell turnover and renewal, helping to fade scars (including acne scars) and even out skin tone.
  • Dehydrated, Compromised Skin: If your skin is feeling dry, sensitive, or over-exfoliated, EGF strengthens the barrier and enhances moisture retention.
  • Redness & Sensitivity: EGF has calming and reparative properties, making it a great choice for those with easily irritated or reactive skin.

Why Drugstore EGF Serums Often Fall Short

Not all EGF serums are worth your time (or your money). Many inexpensive brands tout EGF as a hero ingredient, but there’s a catch:

  1. Misleading Labels: If you’ve seen The Ordinary’s so-called “15% GF” serum (which contains an assortment of growth factors, two of which are far less useful than EGF), you might assume it contains a powerhouse dose of growth factors. But here’s the truth:  Growth Factors and EGF are never used in 15% concentrations—ever. What they’re actually labeling is a 15% solution of a liquid that contains a much smaller, undisclosed amount of EGF. In reality, active EGF is used in minuscule amounts (measured in micrograms or parts per million) because that’s all the skin needs to trigger repair. A properly formulated EGF serum focuses on potency, stability, and an effective delivery system—not a misleading percentage on the label.
  2. Formulation Issues: EGF is a delicate protein that requires a well-formulated base to remain stable. Many cheaper brands don’t invest in the necessary technology to keep EGF effective.
  3. No Delivery System: EGF needs to penetrate the skin to work. Without proper formulation, it just sits on the surface and does nothing.

Timing Matters: Acids and EGF Don’t Mix

If you’re using exfoliating acids (like glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid), be mindful of when you apply EGF. Acids can neutralize growth factors, making them ineffective. To get the most out of both:

  • Apply acids at night and EGF in the morning, OR
  • Wait at least 15-30 minutes between applying an acid and EGF to avoid deactivating the growth factor.

My Favorite High-Potency EGF Serum

For those who want a truly effective EGF serum, I recommend Aviv Botanical Skin Care’s EGF serum, available exclusively at The Lantern Skin Studio. It’s formulated for maximum potency and absorption—meaning real results, not just a trendy ingredient label. And if you’re not local, no worries—I can ship it to you! It's the top-requested serum at the studio, by the way!

Final Thoughts

EGF is an incredible ingredient when used correctly, offering deep skin rejuvenation that pairs well with other actives. The most important consideration when working with EGF is to be sure you are getting a well-formulated product that isn't just hyped up based on bogus labeling. An EGF serum doesn't need to cost $150, but if it's ridiculously cheap (say $15), what's in the bottle is also ridiculously cheap.

Your skin deserves the best—let’s make sure it gets it!
