Beef Tallow in Skin Care: Hype, Hydration Myths, and Why Balance Wins the Day

By Casey Durrett Leave a Comment

A cow depicting the source of tallow in skin care trend

Hey there, skin care lovers! I’m off from the studio today and doing my coaching calls (I coach estheticians who are fresh into the esthetics world). A question came up that I’ve noticed my guests are asking more and more and with this newly licensed esthetician also asking me, I figured I'd better talk about it. So, today we’re going to dive into it (not literally): beef tallow for skin care.

Yep, you heard that right—the stuff your great-great-grandma might have been more familiar with is now being slathered on faces as the next big thing in beauty. People are raving about how it’s super "hydrating", packed with nutrients, and oh-so-natural. But as someone who’s been in the skin care game for a while, I’ve got some thoughts. Spoiler alert: it’s not the holy grail it’s hyped up to be (no offense to the precious cows, you guys are great - I just don't think your fatty bits are our ideal skin care topical). Let me break it down for you with a little analogy that’s close to my heart (and stomach)—think of your skin like a cake.🍰 Ready for some fun, science-y skin talk? Let’s go!

Skin Is Like a Cake: It Needs Water and Oil to Be Its Best

Image of a moist cake containing oil and water

If there’s one thing I’ve learned running The Lantern Skin Studio, it’s that great skin is all about balance. Imagine your skin as a freshly baked cake (bear with me—I’m a sucker for a good dessert metaphor!). A cake needs both water and oil to be moist, fluffy, and downright delicious. Skip the water, and you’ve got a dry, crumbly mess. Skip the oil, and it’s tough and lacks richness. Your skin’s the same way—it craves water to stay plump and hydrated, plus oil to lock it all in and keep things soft. That’s why I’m always telling clients: hydration isn’t just about slathering on something heavy. It’s about giving your skin the whole recipe.

Now, beef tallow is basically pure fat—think of it as the butter in our cake analogy. It’s great at sealing in whatever moisture is already there, but here’s the catch: it doesn’t add water to the mix. If your skin’s dehydrated (lacking water, not just oil), tallow’s like spreading butter on a stale cake—it might soften the surface a bit, but it won’t fix the dryness inside. That’s why I’m a huge fan of creams and lotions over pure fats. They’re like the perfect frosting, blending water, humectants (like hyaluronic acid to draw in moisture), and oils to give your skin everything it needs in one yummy package.🎂

So, What’s the Deal with Beef Tallow? Let’s Weigh the Pros and Cons

I get why tallow’s having a moment. It’s natural, affordable, and has this “back-to-basics” vibe that feels refreshing in a world of 12-step routines. But as a skin care pro, I’ve got to keep it real with you. Here’s the good, the not-so-good, and why I think there are better options out there.

The Good Stuff (Pros)

  • It’s a Solid Barrier Buddy – Tallow’s packed with fatty acids like stearic and oleic acid, which make it great at locking in moisture. It creates a protective layer that can help if your skin’s super dry or irritated—like after a harsh winter day.
  • Nutrient Bonus – It’s got fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and E, which sound amazing in theory. But honestly? There’s no solid proof these penetrate deeply enough to beat out a formulated serum.
  • DIY Dream – If you’re into making your own skin care (or just love a bargain), tallow’s cheap and simple—one ingredient, no fuss. I can see the appeal for the minimalist crowd!

The Not-So-Great Stuff (Cons)

  • It Doesn’t Hydrate Like You Think – Tallow can seal in moisture, but it doesn’t add water hydration to your skin. If your skin’s dehydrated, it won’t plump it up like a good cream which contains both oil and water would. It’s all oil, no water—half the recipe’s missing!
  • Can Clog Pores – Tallow’s heavy. Like, really heavy. For some of my clients with oily or breakout-prone skin, heavy fats like this can clog pores faster than you can say “blackhead.” Dermatologists estimate 30-50% of people might find it comedogenic (pore-clogging), depending on their skin type.
  • Limited Science – Despite the hype, there’s not a ton of solid research backing tallow for skin care. Most studies say we need more research to know if it’s really as amazing as TikTok claims.
  • Greasy Vibes – Let’s be real—tallow can feel like you’re rubbing bacon grease on your face (and sometimes smell like it too). Not exactly the luxe experience I want when I’m pampering myself after a long day.
  • Ethical Concerns – Even though tallow is often a byproduct of the livestock industry, there are plenty of plant-based alternatives that work just as well (or better!) without using animal fats.🐮

Why Pure Fats Aren’t the Be-All, End-All for Skin Care

Let’s zoom out for a sec and talk about why any pure fat—tallow or otherwise—has its limits:

  • No Water, No Plump – Pure fats can’t add water to your skin; they only trap what’s already there. If your skin’s dehydrated, they won’t fix the root issue.
  • Over-Occlusion Risk – Ever slathered on something so thick your skin felt suffocated? Heavy fats can create a barrier that traps sweat or bacteria, which isn’t great for everyone—especially if you’re prone to breakouts or live somewhere humid.
  • Greasy Feel – Pure fats don’t absorb as nicely as a well-made cream. They sit on top, feeling heavy, which isn’t always comfortable for daily use.

This is why I’m Team Creams-and-Lotions all the way. They give you the best of both worlds—water to hydrate, oils to lock it in, and a texture that feels good going on. Your skin gets the full cake experience: moist, rich, and perfectly balanced.

Better Alternatives If You Insist on Pure Oils

Here are some non-comedogenic options that won’t clog pores:

  • Squalane (lightweight, absorbs quickly, great for all skin types)
  • Hemp Seed Oil (rich in omega fatty acids, balances oil production)
  • Rosehip Oil (high in antioxidants, supports skin repair)
  • Jojoba Oil (closest to skin’s natural sebum, excellent for hydration)
  • Marula Oil (deeply nourishing, non-greasy finish)

Let’s Talk About Your Skin!

🐄The tallow trend is fun to think about, but I’m sticking with what I know works best for most of my clients: balanced hydration that gives your skin the full cake treatment—water, oil, and all the good stuff in between. Book a facial at The Lantern Skin Studio, and we’ll chat about whatever skin care questions are on your mind. I’d love to help you find what works best for your unique skin!

What do you think—have you tried tallow yet? Drop me a comment or stop by—I’m all ears!
